Dearest patrons of Paper Boat,

As of May 31st Paper Boat Boutique & Gallery will be closing its doors after 4 great years of being open. The current economic climate is the main reason that led us to this very difficult decision.

We really hope you can join us for our last Gallery reception featuring work by Wisconsin artist Micaela O’Herlihy on Gallery Night, April 17th from 7-10pm.

There will also be a closing sale for the month of May to help us reduce our inventory. It will be a great time to pick up those items you’ve always been meaning to get. Also, don't forget to spend your gift certificates if you have been holding onto one!

We thank you so very much for your support over the past 4 years. Even though the Boat is closing, we are excited to seek out new opportunities and projects. We also want to stress the importance of supporting the remaining small businesses and galleries in Milwaukee. Those spaces are vital to keeping our city and our community unique and enjoyable.

Paper Boat Gallery is very pleased to welcome back Athens, GA based mixed media artist Sarah Neuburger for her second show in Milwaukee . Neuberger's 2007 "Peeps" show nearly sold out and we could not be more pleased to be featuring her work in our space a second time. This exhibitNeuburger will not only be showing her world famous detailed tiny clothespin peeps but also a variety of her mixed media work including "retouched" photos where she is "rewriting history and giving everyone that perfect camera smile everytime."

Artist Bio

Sarah Neuburger was born in Normal, IL and was quickly transplanted to the middle of South Carolina where she grew up acquiring a subtle southern accent and one very big sweet tooth. After attending Columbia College, she decided to head up further the East Coast for a little snow and received her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. After school, she worked for a non-profit arts organization as an arts administrator for several years and left it all one fateful summer to start her own business. Her unique, quirky designs and illustrations gracing everything from needle cases and rubber stamps to metal canisters and embroidered patches along with the sale of her original artwork. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and is in hundreds of collections worldwide.

Named the “Next Big Thing” by Fred Flare (www.fredflare.com) in their annual product design contest, three years in a row. While she was the only designer chosen three straight years, she is assured in the fact that this simply must mean she is destined for great big things any day now. Her own illustrations and products have received a prestigious place on the glossy pages of several books, including: Tease: 50 Inspired T-shirt Transformations by Superstars of Art, Craft and Design published by Perigree Books, which also features work by Amy Sedaris, Todd Oldham and Debbie Stoller; The Crafter’s Companion published by Snowbooks; Handmade Nation by Faythe Levine and Cortney Heimerl; from Chronicle Books her illustration was featured in Picture Perfect Knits by Laura Birek; as well has her original design inThe Pillow Book by Shannon Okey and another original project featured in Handmade Hellos by Sabrina and Eunice Moyle who are the creative pair behind the popular brand Hello!Lucky.

She was honored with being included in the Taiwanese art + design magazine, dpi, in their issue devoted strictly to international women designers. Her work was showcased again the magazine’s special issue entitled “60+ Design Stars Boulevard” published in late 2008. Sarah’s work has been published in several other magazines such as Vogue Girl Korea, Mary Engelbreit’s Home Companion, CRAFT, Bust, Bitch, Adorn, Readymade Magazine, among others.

She has appeared on the national cable television show Uncommon Threads (broadcasts on HGTV and DIY networks) and her stamp sets are scheduled to be showcased on the Bay area television talk show The View from the Bay later this summer.

Most recently, illustrations have been commissioned for If’n Books + Marks (www.ifnbooks.com), Art Star (www.artstarphilly.com), Hello Yarn (www.helloyarn.com) and The Sampler (www.homeofthesampler.com). Her online store has been mentioned on several well respected web blogs which include: Daily Candy, Boing Boing, Mighty Goods, Oh Joy! and Design*Sponge. Blueprint magazine posted the Nesting Doll Stamp Sets as one of their favorites on their web blog entitled Bluelines. Followed by Parent magazine proclaiming on their web blog, Goodyblog, that “artist, Sarah Neuburger, [is the] creator of the most amazing rubber stamps ever!” Currently, she is working on several projects with Chronicle Books which are scheduled to be released in Fall 2009.

Curator Statement
Like many of her fans, I first came across with work of Lisa Congdon through the blogosphere. Her online presence on art and design sites is one hard to avoid. Lisa's strong style and saturated color pallet draws the viewer in immediately. I find it difficult to look away from the work wanting to pick it a part, figure out where all the elements came from. In 2007 sent her an email hoping that we could work together and we are so excited to not only have this be her first show in Wisconsin but also a show with all new work. Lisa will be installing for a week previous to the opening and attending the reception. Please join us in welcoming Lisa Congdon to Milwaukee with her very special show- Life in WonderMountain that will incorporate wall based work as well as a site specific installation.

San Francisco mixed media artist and illustrator Lisa Congdon did not begin making art until she was 33 years old; at age 40, it is now the most significant part of her life and livelihood. Aside from a painting class, Lisa is entirely self-taught. She uses her lack of training to her advantage: instead of following refined technique, she works with her own sense of color, composition and design as her guide. Lisa is most known mostly for her brightly colored, other-worldly paintings of animals and birch tree forests and her three dimensional shadowboxes that combine strange Victorian objects and ephemera with modern, graphic details.

Statement
For her upcoming December 2008 show at Paper Boat Gallery in Milwaukee—entitled Life in WonderMountain—Lisa will continue to explore the chimeric world of the WonderMountain dwellers, whose world is made up of opposites. In Lisa's first three-dimensional installation, she will portray the bizarre world of WonderMountain and its inhabitants. Using worn vintage crochet and sepia-toned photographs juxtaposed with fantastical brightly colored neon geometric details, Lisa creates an enchanted world of old and new, graphic and earthy, frightening and familiar.

Accomplishments
Lisa's work has been shown in over eight cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco and Portland. Her story and work have been featured in numerous print magazines and art and design blogs, including ReadyMade, Country Living, CRAFT, design*sponge, Daily Candy, Juxtapoz, Stitch, Venus and Bitch. Her illustration clients include the National Poetry Foundation, Galison Stationary, Chronicle Books and Pottery Barn. She has a new line of stationary which will be released in the Spring of 2009 by Chronicle Books. Lisa is co-owner and gallery director at Rare Device, a popluar design shop and art gallery in located in San Francisco.

Paper Boat is pleased to bring the dynamic prints of Milwaukee based artist Kimberly Weiss and Minneapolis based artist Joseph Rizzo. Weiss will be showing her series titled "Tough Knots, Bad Landings" which combines relief printmaking and collage to depict natural disasters in a decorative arts style. She received a BFA in Printmaking from Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in 2004. Joseph's paintings showcase his unique eye that combines iconic imagery to create a commentary on politics, culture and environments. In Rizzo's words, "I invent icons to reference social and political issues such as modern imperialism, environmental pollution, government surveillance, and violence in our culture."

Friday, August 1st: Gallery Opening + Live Music!

We are so very excited to welcome Providence based artists Leif Goldberg and Erin Rosenthal who are driving across country to install their show and also share their music with us at the opening party Friday night. Please swing by to check out the event, all are http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifwelcome. Music will be outside weather (and neighbors) permitting.

The event will start at 7pm and the music will begin around 8:30 with Leif & Erin's band CRUDE HILL, then Milwaukee based WOODEN ROBOT will play a short set. We will be passing the hat to assist with gas money for the artists.

Paper Boat mentioned in the LA Times & the launch of MIGA!

Kim & I are making our second Paper Boat trip together this summer! First it was out to Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn to promote my documentary Handmade Nation and to scout for new awesome merch to bring back to the boat in Milwaukee for you!

Tomorrow, we fly West for a silent art auction fundraiser to help raise finishing costs for Handmade Nation. What is super exciting is the documentary as well as the event were written about in the LA Times this week and Paper Boat was given a shout out! Read the article HERE.

"Sailvan in Arizona" 2004 Paper Boat is pleased to be showing the varied work of artist, filmmaker and photographer Bill Daniel. "Sunset Scavenger" will feature a variety of wall based work, based around Daniel's most recent romance with houseboat culture. There will be mural-sized Xerox blow-ups which are a way to turn the imagery into wheat-pasteable graffiti, and some new digital murals, as well as some traditional b/w photography. A special screening of Daniel's documentary film "Who Is Bozo Texino" will be shown on Gallery Night (in the backyard, weather permitting). Sunset Scavenger is a project supported by Creative Capital Foundation. Also available throughout the duration of the exhibit will be Daniel's new book "Mostly True" published by Microcosm, a companion to his documentary "Who is Bozo Texino? Artist Statement: "Sunset Scavenger is the catch-all title for an on-going series of related projects--- photo, video, installation--- that started around 2002 when I coupled my interest in outlaw houseboaters with my long-time fascination with the specter of environmental collapse. Since then the project has morphed and evolved to include more subjects, like Katrina, Peak Oil, traditional and punk-style boat building, people living in vehicles… The documentary aspects are woven together with more mythological and folksy elements. I'm drawn to all kinds of American vernacular forms, from railroad graffiti to hippie buses. When people weld an old VW van to the top of a schoolbus to make a mobile house--- that is one of my favorite expressions of ingenuity and self-reliance. Now I want to find someone who is figuring out how to turn abandoned SUVs into greenhouses. Filmography:

Shot on freight hopping trips across the wild West and 16 years in the making, this is the mostly-factual cinematic account of the epic search and unlikely discovery of hobohemia's most legendary boxcar artist.

Who is Bozo Texino? chronicles the search for the source of a ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti-- a simple sketch of a character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, "Bozo Texino"-- a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel's gritty black and white film uncovers a secret society and it's underground universe of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with legendary boxcar artists, Coaltrain, Herby, Colossus of Roads, and The Rambler. Shooting over a 16-year period, Daniel rode freights across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex. During his quest he discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone mostly unnoticed for a century. Taking inspiration from Beat artists Robert Frank and Jack Kerouac, the film functions as both a sub-cultural documentary and a stylized fable on wanderlust and outsider identity. "I was drawn to the subject by the universal graffiti impulse and the classic, corny notion of freight train blues escape." � BD

Biography
born Dallas, Texas 1959
Texas-born, San Francisco exile, and confirmed tramp, Bill Daniel continues to experiment with survivalism and bricolage in his attempts to record and report on the various social margins he often finds himself in. Working without an art or film school education, he endeavors to make work that connects with an outsider audience. His work began in 1980 as he participated in and photo documented the blossoming punk rock scene in Austin, Texas. Since then his subcultural documentary subjects have included bicycle messengers, radical environmentalists, hobo graffiti artists, swap meet guitar players, rural drag racers, and "water squatters"--outlaw anchored live-aboards. His study and love for documentary photography and filmmaking has given Daniel the charge to create work that communicates across socioeconomic boundaries. Drawing from his backgrounds in studio photography, experimental media and the construction trades, Daniel builds site-specific viewing environments as a method for deploying non-linear documentary material within an allegorical, interactive setting.

Daniel's work has received awards from Creative Capital, Film Arts Foundation, The Pioneer Fund, Texas Filmmaker Production Fund, the R & B Feder Charitable Foundation, and The Western States Media Alliance. He was a Wattis Foundation artist-in-residence at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where his installation "Souls Harbor" was exhibited in Dec. In 1999 he was in-residence at The Headlands Center for the Arts where he produced several multi-projection 16mm film installations, including "Trespassing Sign" in collaboration with the late Margaret Kilgallen. In 2001 his hobo campfire installation "The Girl on the Train in the Moon" was included in "Widely Unknown" at Deitch Projects in New York. A veteran of the touring scene, Daniel has programmed, booked and exhibited several mobile art shows, including the Lucky Bum Film Tour with partner Vanessa Renwick. In 1997-98 he curated a weekly screening series, Funhouse Cinema, in Austin, that also regularly screened in Houston and San Antonio. Daniel is also recognized for his work as cinematographer and editor for filmmaker Craig Baldwin. Other endeavors include publishing two zines--The Western Roundup, a punk fanzine in 1981-82, and Detour, a situationist journal in 1986. He is also the creator of an experimental sports league, The Texas Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Hockey Association.

1. Tell us briefly what you make/do:
Everything I make is made from crocheted plastic (grocery) bags. My line originally started with handbags and now has expanded to include change purses of various sizes, cuff bracelets with vintage buttons and key chains.2. How long have you been doing it?
I began the process of making plastic yarn about 8 years ago as an Art student at the University of Delaware. I first made large, organic, crocheted sculptures and after a few years of that began experimenting with bag forms.

3. Where did you learn your skills?
My mom! She taught me how to crochet when I was a kid and I have always loved doing it.

4. What's your current inspiration?
The new colors of bags that people are sending me are fabulous! I feel like I have a complete new spring line and that is really exciting. I love trying new color combinations.

5. What have you been listening to while you work?
I have been watching the first season of 30 Rock and listening to the new Cat Power CD, the Flatlanders and M. Ward. Not all at the same time.

6. What else do you do to keep busy?
I am a full time art teacher at a public school and that keeps me busy. I am constantly working on something.

7. Any summer plans you are looking forward to?
The summer is when I get to relax, work on my house, garden, craft, drink coffee and sleep in.
